Earth’s rotation is slowing, everyone gets an extra second this week..

El último minuto del día de mañana (junio 30, de 2015) va a durar 61 segundos. Todos tendremos un segundo extra.

Es necesario para mantener sincronizado nuestro horario universal -lo que es un verdadero lío-, en base a dos de los criterios más comunes que conocemos hasta ahora para medir el tiempo (uno muy reciente y otro muy antiguo):
1. El UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), que es el que se mide con relojes atómicos en laboratorios científicos como el TAI (Temps Atomique International), en Francia
2. La rotación de la tierra, que obviamente es algo que ya también los astrónomos -como los del IAU (International Astronomical Union)- hacen con precisión infinitesimal. Lo que lleva a la conclusión que la tierra cada vez gira más lento.

Si eres de las muchas personas que creen que el tiempo es lo más valioso que existe, esto es como si te regalaran un granito de oro temporal. Increíble, no?.
Por otro lado, si eres de las que entiende que el tiempo es algo que  realmente no existe (es un criterio inventado, como lo acabo de plantear en un posteo reciente), pues te parecerá normal y seguro el que haya un ajuste de este tipo ni te asusta ni te sorprende en lo más mínimo.

Atomic clocks around the world will coordinate the leap second, which is necessary to keep Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) — the system that guides most international civil times systems — synced with the Earth’s rotation.On Tuesday, atomic clocks should read 23:59:59, then 23:59:60, before switching over to Wednesday with 00:00:00.

Michael Wouters, head of the Time and Frequency team at Australia’s National Measurement Institute told Mashable Australia the leap second is being introduced because the difference between UTC and astronomical time has come close to one second.Atomic time or UTC is based off highly accurate atomic clocks, but scientists also maintain time scales based on the rotation of the Earth using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) that uses radio telescopes to measure the Earth’s orientation. “These two things don’t always agree with each other,” he said…

Earth Flag

No se si algún día todas las personas lleguemos a vernos mutuamente como una sola especie que comparte y vive en un mismo planeta (ojalá lo hagamos). Pero por si ese día llegue aquí ya tenemos un propuesta de cual puede ser la imagen que nos represente en otros mundos, es decir la bandera de la tierra.

La propuesta comenzó como el proyecto de tesis de un universitario sueco llamado Oskar Pernefeldt, y es resultado de todo un trabajo de vexilología (precisamente la ciencia que estudia a las banderas), algo mucho más complejo de lo que podríamos creer, por todas las regulaciones internacionales que hay que cumplir para ser “oficial”, y por toda la asesoría que se tuvo durante el proyecto: astrónomos, científicos, diseñadores, marcas como LG, y hasta la misma NASA.

Parecería que por ahora el tener un bandera mundial será de poca utilidad para la mayoría de las personas. No todos vamos a la luna o fuera del planeta muy frecuentemente. Pero hay que pensar que es un paso importante hacia una conciencia global sobre nosotros mismos.  ¿O acaso existe alguna bandera que sirva para alguna otra cosa? No amigos, el valor de esta y cualquier otra bandera, y cualquier otro símbolo patrio no puede ser más que simbólico. Y ojo, eso no le quita valor (al contrario), pues la hace formar parte lo que algunos historiadores llaman “realidades imaginadas”, algo primordial para entender el fenómeno de la cultura y la civilización humana en general.

Sólo un consejo más: La bandera es de todos; úsenla con sabiduría…

Buenas noticias: unos científicos del condado de Albany (Nueva York) acaban de inventar y probar exitosamente un “dispositivo para reconocimiento de ondas cerebrales”, que puede convertir a texto nuestros pensamientos.

Malas noticias: para hacerlo funcionar tienes que tener el cráneo abierto, con el cerebro expuesto, y adherirle unos electrodos directamente en la corteza.

Early adopters, recomiendo esperar un poco más para encontrarle usos. A menos que sean Hannibal Lecter…

No, it’s not science fiction. For the first time ever, scientists in Albany, NY were able to use a “brain-to-text” interface to read thoughts and translate them into text. But it wasn’t as simple as one might imagine. In fact, the experiment made me a bit squeamish. To use the “device,” researchers placed seven patients in a controlled environment to perform a bit of surgery.

The patients’ skulls were split open and electrode sheets were attached directly to their brains. They were also asked to read aloud from various texts (the Gettysburg Address, JFK’s inaugural address, Charmed fan fiction, and a children’s story) to get a baseline of what their brains were doing while they were speaking.

Finally, the “brainwave recognition device” was able to translate the patients’ thoughts onto paper, although the translations were rough and limited. Waze & Terminator

Para promocionar su nueva película de la saga de Terminator – Genesis, la productora (Paramount) hizo una alianza con la gente de Waze (la aplicación de tráfico y navegación a base de comandos de voz), para que en estos días de su lanzamiento l agente pueda tener la opción de tener la voz del famoso T-800.

Esto equivale a decir que tendrás a Arnold Scharzenegger guiándote por Waze en tu coche. Con todo y su pésimo inglés (y esperemos que con algunas de sus frases mas célebres).

No se ustedes pero a mí la promoción, además que perecerme original, me parece ca-ga-dí-si-ma. Y si no entienden porqué vean los videos de los comments en la nota de Gizmodo que les comparto…

Lo único que no tomaron en cuenta es que además de tener a Terminator en el coche, para muchos de nsotros la voz de arnold tambien equivale a tener a Conan, al Kindergarten-Cop, a Comando, a Mr. Freeze, a Quaid (de Total Recall), a uno de los Twins, al papá de El regalo prometido… y ya mejor no sigo.

Pero la verdad -y con todo lo grinch que soy- es que sí me dan ganas de usar Waze (casi no lo abro), para hablar un rato con Arnold. Lo que quiere decir que la promo va a funcionar…

Puedes planear tu vida todo lo que quieras. No va a suceder así…

Aquí hay buena reflexión. la saqué de una película llamada “Love”, una historia de sci-fi (William Eubank, 2011) que cuenta las aventuras de un astronauta que en una misión solitaria a la ISS (Internationa Space Station) pierde contacto por la tierra debido a un cataclismo nuclear.

El ver toda la civilización desaparecer desde su pequeño aislamiento, lo lleva a tener increíbles reflexiones sobre la condición humana. Esto ha hecho que este filme independiente, de bajo presupuesto y filmado en el jardin de un casa (casi en sus totalidad) haya sido comparado con grandes obras maestras del género, como Moon, 2001: Odisea del espacio o Solaris.

Por si no saben que ver en Netflix, esta es buena opción…

The illusion of time

Les tengo malas noticias sobre el tiempo. Resulta que, al ser relativo, en realidad no existe.
No se puede medir porque no es algo universal (igual en todo lugar y momento). No existen los segundos, los minutos ni los años. No existe el pasado como algo incambiable que quedó atrás, ni el futuro como algo indefinido que aún no sucede. Tampoco es ese “río” corriendo en una sola dirección en el que siempre pensamos. No hay una sola ley física que pruebe ni explique nada de ese fluir.

Pienso que son malas noticias porque aceptémoslo, el tiempo es una de las cosas más valiosas para el ser humano (o eso creemos). Sin embargo -y a pesar de organizar toda nuestra vida en base a él-, ni si quiera lo podemos explicar (lo que nos vuelve, a mi modo de verlo, unos perfectos idiotas en el tema).

Estas ideas nos las dice Brian Greene, un profesor del Institute for Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics (ISCAP, en la Universidad de Columbia, New York) en un documental que forma parte de una serie de la PBS llamada “NOVA – The Fabric of the Cosmos“ (NOVA – El tejido del cosmos), extraido de los libros del mismo autor.

Dinosaur Supervisor

Ahora que todo mundo está de nuevo interesado con el tema de Jurassic Park, aquí hay una interesante nota que leí al respecto de esta secuela iniciada por Spielberg y que revolucionó los efectos especiales en el cine. La historia es sobre uno de los animadores de stop motion más famosos de antaño (Phil Tippett), que aprovechó el cambio de lo análogo a lo digital en el mundo de los efectos especiales (CGI) para obtener uno de los puestos mas envidiables que se han conocido en la industria del cine: “Supervisor de Dinosaurios”.

Me alegra pensar que lo nuevo siempre se alimenta de lo viejo…

Spielberg assembled the Mount Rushmore of VFX — Stan Winston, Phil Tippett, Dennis Muren and Michael Lantieri — to bring dinosaurs to life for Universal Pictures’ adaptation of Michael Crichton’s book. The plan was to incorporate a blend of conventional techniques: full-scale mechanical dinos (like the T-rex at the paddock and the ailing triceratops) and high-speed miniatures (the running herds, many of the raptor shots).

At the time, Industrial Light and Magic was experimenting with computer-generated graphics, which it had used in the James Cameron films The Abyss and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. But CGI had only been used to make stylized liquid and metallic surfaces, not living, breathing creatures. Muren, who had been working with the technique at the Bay Area effects shop, suggested they give it a try, and created a short shot of T-rex running through a field.

“I’ve become extinct!” Tippett famously exclaimed, a line Spielberg liked so much he wrote it into an exchange between Drs. Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm…

But Tippett had learned an extraordinary amount about paleontology, the physicality of dinosaurs and the movements of animals for Jurassic Park and his previous dinosaur short films. Though the creatures’ bodies were being moved from his fingertips to computer screens, Tippett knew how they were supposed to look and behave. He had a new role: dinosaur supervisor…
