OLO Smartphone 3D Printer

Este proyecto por financiamiento (KickStarter) me tiene sorprendido: una cajita de 99 dólares que convierte cualquier teléfono en una impresora 3D, utilizando la luz de este en lugar de un proyector (una de las partes mas caras de este tipo de impresoras). El telefono se ubica debajo de un contenedor de resina con fondo de cristal, para ir enviando patrones a diferentes capas del material por medio de una aplicación disponible para IOS y Android.

La aplicación es compatible los principales formatos y aplicaciones de 3D, y se pueden utilizar diferentes tipos de material, flexible, duro, traslúcido, de colores, etc.

Esto va a democratizar mucho la impresión en 3D, poniéndola prácticamente al alcance de cualquiera. Genial…

For those of you who might’ve missed the product’s debut, here’s the lowdown: OLO is designed to take your smartphone and transform it into a fully functional 3D printer. No joke — you seriously just fire up the app, choose the object you want to print, pop your phone into the device’s base, and pull out a completed part a few minutes later. It’s like magic, and the whole thing costs less than a pair of Nikes.

Here’s how it works: The printer consists of three main parts — a reservoir, a special photopolymer resin that you pour into it, and a mechanized lid that contains the build plate and control electronics. At the bottom of the reservoir, there’s a piece of polarized glass which you place your phone underneath, facing upward.

Basically, once you place the lid on top and the printer starts going, the app makes your phone’s screen light up with a specific pattern. The polarized glass then takes all this light (which shines outwardly to give your phone a wider viewing angle) and redirects it so that all the photons are traveling straight upward. So as your phone’s screen beams light up into the reservoir, the directed light causes a layer of resin to harden onto the build plate, which slowly moves upward as each new layer is created. It’s basically a tiny DLP printer that uses your phone’s screen instead of a projector — which is absolutely brilliant, because doing so replaces the single most expensive part of a stereolithography printer with something cheap and very common…

CardBoard Camera

Sabía que llegaría este momento, en el que para hacer realidad virtual no necesitarías más que bajar una aplicación a tu teléfono.

Es como tomar una foto en 360º (lo que ya es trivial con varias apps de Android y iPhone, pero convirtiéndola a un ambiente inmersivo, visible con cualquier accesorio tipo CardBoard viewer (el cartonsito ese que prácticamente sacó de la jugada a empresas como Oculus Rift).

Valdría la pena hacer algunos experimentos con esto…

Cardboard Camera, available now on Google Play, allows users to capture 360-degree panoramas that they can view in Google Cardboard. You can also capture sound, along with the image, for an even more immersive experience.

Open the app’s camera and capture a 360-degree photo the same way you would shoot a panorama. The app then takes a few seconds to render the image. Once finished, you can view it as a panorama or pop it into a Cardboard viewer for a deeper look.

Like 360-degree videos, panoramic photos aren’t technically virtual reality, even if you’re viewing them in a virtual reality viewer like Cardboard. Roboroach

Usar la tecnología para controlar las mente y las acciones de un ser vivo. Cyborgs, Bio-hacking (de seres vivientes, por supuesto). Suena a plan maquiavélico de algún villano de Jamea Bond y otra película ficiticia, pero aún lejano a la realidad, ¿cierto?

Wrong! Eso ya está sucediendo. Aquí les dejo una inciativa llamada “Roboroach”, donde puedes comprar este kit por internet para controlar el movimeinto de una cucaracha (no incluída). El kit incluye un pequeño arnés para el insecto, con los electrodos que emitirán radio-frecuencias a las antenas de la cucaracha, controlando sus movimientos. Y la interface del controlador es… (adivinen qué) una palicación para tu celular. 

Así que ya lo sabes, cuando alguien te quiera asuetar, halándote de un futuro post-apocalíptio amenazante, donde todos seremos Bio-hackeados y convertidos en esclavos de la tecnología, tu podrás responder:

Waze & Terminator

Para promocionar su nueva película de la saga de Terminator – Genesis, la productora (Paramount) hizo una alianza con la gente de Waze (la aplicación de tráfico y navegación a base de comandos de voz), para que en estos días de su lanzamiento l agente pueda tener la opción de tener la voz del famoso T-800.

Esto equivale a decir que tendrás a Arnold Scharzenegger guiándote por Waze en tu coche. Con todo y su pésimo inglés (y esperemos que con algunas de sus frases mas célebres).

No se ustedes pero a mí la promoción, además que perecerme original, me parece ca-ga-dí-si-ma. Y si no entienden porqué vean los videos de los comments en la nota de Gizmodo que les comparto…

Lo único que no tomaron en cuenta es que además de tener a Terminator en el coche, para muchos de nsotros la voz de arnold tambien equivale a tener a Conan, al Kindergarten-Cop, a Comando, a Mr. Freeze, a Quaid (de Total Recall), a uno de los Twins, al papá de El regalo prometido… y ya mejor no sigo.

Pero la verdad -y con todo lo grinch que soy- es que sí me dan ganas de usar Waze (casi no lo abro), para hablar un rato con Arnold. Lo que quiere decir que la promo va a funcionar…

Twin Strangers

Si quieren encontrar a su gemelo, su clon, su duplicado, o como le llamen, vean este sitio y el proyecto que contiene (twinstrangers.com). Básicamente un concurso que vive en la plataforma de Facebook, crowdsourced, y que aprovecha los millones de fotos y usuarios online para hacer un match facial de tu cara con la de otra persona en algún lugar del planeta, y ver cuántos gemelos “perdidos" existen por ahi. Aún es muy elemental su forma de operar, pero podría evolucionar hacia algo más automático (SaaS).

De hecho, con los softwares de reconocimiento facial que actualmente ya existen y ciertos permisos concedidos, el search podría ser casi instantáneo.

¿Encontrar alguien idéntico a tí con sólo dar un clic? Eso sería inmoralmente interesante…

Ahora que se confirmó la filmación de TRON 3, existe mucha expectativa sobre de qué va a tratar esta icónica saga (de la cultura digital). Supongo que una de las grandes preguntas es qué pasará si Clu 2.0 (o algún otro villano) llega a traspasar de su mundo virtual al nuestro (para controlarlo).

A lo mejor luciría mas o menos como el siguiente experimento: alguien tomó un sistema de mapeo de código abierto (tipo Google Maps) llamado Mapzen’s Tangram y lo convirtió en una alucinante visualización futurista de cualquier lugar del mundo que quieran ver.

El experimento aún no tiene un motor de búsqueda, pero si quieren ir rapido a  algún otro destino pueden buscar cualquier ciudad aquí , obtener sus coordenadas y reemplazarlas en la misma dirección (aquí tenemos por ejemplo el bonito Centro Histórico de la ciudad de Mexico)…

Esta se me fué: hace 4 meses salió una aplicación que te permite tener una novia virtual, que te busca, te manda fotos, mensajes con corazoncitos, y hasta se pelea contigo. Hoy salió la versión para mujeres, o sea, para tener todo un galanazo mandándote amor (por tan solo $24.99 dolares mensuales).

¿Soy solo yo o alguien mas cree que esto es lo más triste del mundo?…

It has come to this: an app that will help you invent a fake boyfriend. It’s called Invisible Boyfriend, and its significant other-creating services — including texts, calls, and handwritten notes — can be yours for just $24.99 a month.

Invisible Boyfriend first previewed a version of its service, Invisible Girlfriend, back in 2013. But both girl and boy subscription services were, well, invisible until they officially launched Tuesday.

The company says it’s not just for people who want to create the illusion of having a significant other. Sure, you can use it to trick your friends and family but it also “creates a safe space for you to practice texting with a real human if you’re out of practice,” the company writes on its blog.

They also note the app can even be of use to you even if you have an IRL significant other. Because what relationship doesn’t need a little manipulation? Says the company: “Sometimes it even inspires just enough jealousy to jolt that special person into committing.”

The whole thing sounded bizarre, and more than a little creepy. So of course, I had to try out the service for myself.

You begin by choosing a name, age, photo, and personality trait for your invisible partner (there’s also an Invisible Girlfriend service, so no one is left out; the whole thing is LGBT friendly, too.)

The site even lets you create a backstory for how you met, though I chose to keep the one it automatically generated, which was something about us getting our drinks mixed up at Starbucks (swoon)…
