For those who didn’t catch it in theaters when it accompanied Wreck-It Ralph at the tail end of last year, Disney Animation’s Paperman has debuted online, giving everyone a chance to look at the Oscar-nominated animated short that blends hand-drawn and computer-generated imagery in a beautiful, innovative way that might just look like the future of animation as a whole.

The first thing you notice about Paperman is how different it seems from most modern cartoons, not just because of the limited color palette and retro styling of the characters and the world they live in, but because it doesn’t look like the generic, quasi-photo-realistic CGI animation of everything fromPixar’s Brave to, well, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph. It actually looks as if real people have created it, not machines, and that’s something we haven’t really seen in feature animation for years…

Mysterious buildings

Without the use of a camera Portland-based artist Jim Kazanjian sifts through a library of some 25,000 images from which he carefully selects the perfect elements to digitally assemble mysterious buildings born from the mind of an architect gone mad. While the architectural and organic pieces seem wildly random and out of place, Kazanjian brings just enough cohesion to each structure to suggest a fictional purpose or story that begs to be told. La fotografía de Marcin Stawiarz es de lo mejor que he visto en blanco y negro. El manejo del sistema de zonas hace que la imagen tenga un alto-contraste sorprendente, casi como si fuera un ilustración cyber-punk, o la escena de una novela oscura de anime…

Marcin es un fotógrafo experimental polaco (nacido en 1981 en Czestochowa) que tiene una especie de fascinación por los paisajes y escenas urbanas.

“…Siempre he estado fascinado por los paisajes, lugares que son completamente desolados, donde puedo estar de igual a igual con la naturaleza. Para mí, el éxtasis antes de apretar el botón así como la posibilidad de interactuar con el mundo lleno de inspiración es tan importante como el acto creativo mismo. La inicial fascinación se ha convertido rápidamente en una obsesión que eventualmente toma el control sobre mi vida…”

Biografía:

  • Su trabajo ha sido publicado en revistas de todo el mundo y ha ganado varios premios.
  • Es managing editor de la revista Neutral Density.
  • En la actualidad, también realiza fotografías urbanas, intentando darles las mismas cualidades que al paisaje: armonía y paz y ausencia de la figura humana.
