Tablets for the blind

Una tablet creda por el Dr. Sile O’Modhrain de la Universidad de Michigan para poder ser leída con el tacto por ciegos, modificando la superficie de su display físicamente y usando el sistema braile (como muestra este video).

Y según he leído, muy económica de producir, pensando en fines educativos.
Se ve que les urge capturar a ese publico…

Researchers at the University of Michigan recently unveiled a new Braille-enabled prototype tablet that makes it possible for those with vision problems to read text on a full display . The tablet itself features fully refreshable pages containing raised bumps, a marked improvement from current devices that can only display one line of Braille text at a time.

Led by professor Dr. Sile O’Modhrain, researchers at the University of Michigan are also planning to add the ability for individuals with vision impairment to ‘read’ graphs, photographs and other non-text items….

Moving Collage

El artista de Michigan Nathaniel Whitcomb comenzó haciendo sus primeras obtras de arte (collages) con cutter y papel. Ahora con ayuda de herramientas digitales para animar crea mundos completos basados en esta técnica, llenos de una extraña obscuridad y humor surrealista. Algunos son tan buenos que podría verlos por horas…

Nathaniel Whitcomb’s adoration for collage began in his twelfth year with an x-acto knife and an apprenticeship at his father’s sign manufacturing company. Meticulously cutting away at vinyl alphabets, Whitcomb became cut happy and joined up at his university laboratory to dissect human cadavers. After uni, Whitcomb, possessing both Biology and Studio Art degrees, decided that wasn’t quite enough. So he taught himself design and coding and began creating immersive extracted poetry and projection collages. Surreal landscapes of archival imagery, gleaned from the yellowed pages of abandoned National Geographic magazines, float and warp and explore dream, memory and myth, all in equal measure…

Realism challenges

Algunos artistas están obsesionados con el realismo. Deberían estarlo más con lo que transmite su obra. Este joven de Michigan es un maestro del “trampantojo” (menuda palabrita que acabo de descubrir es la castellanización del concepto trompe l’oeil).
Su habilidad de imitar la realidad es casi un fenómeno por la rapidez y perfección con que la logra. Pero su obra mas allá del buen oficio de “reproducir”, no dice nada.

Ojo gente creativa, el significado lo es todo en el arte…

El divorcio perjudica seriamente al medio ambiente

El aumento de los divorcios ha dado lugar a la creación de más hogares con menos individuos, en los que el rendimiento de recursos como el agua y la electricidad es peor, generando un impacto negativo sobre el medioambiente, según un estudio de la Universidad de Michigan publicado en la revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Las cifras no dejan lugar a dudas: sólo en 2005 en los Estados Unidos podrían haberse ahorrado aproximadamente 73.000 millones de kilovatios-hora de electricidad y 627.000 millones de galones de agua si el rendimiento de los recursos en los hogares resultantes de los divorcios se hubieran mantenido en los mismos niveles que tenían cuando eran núcleos familiares basados en el matrimonio. Extendiendo el estudio a 12 países desarrollados y en vías de desarrollo de todo el planeta, Jack Liu y Eunice Yu identificaron tendencias muy similares…
