Running = No cancer

Running is also great for holding off cancer. We know well enough that regular physical exercise can limit the development and recurrence of cancer, and there has been evidence that it can improve outcomes and functional capacity in cancer patients even to the point of suppressing tumors, but the mechanisms behind this have been murky. This is where a new study in the journal Cell comes in, describing not just the tumor-limiting effects of voluntary running in mice, but also how that limiting actually happens via the activation of immune cells known as NK or “natural killer” cells, a type of lymphocyte or white blood cell whose function is all in the name…

MIAMI (Reuters) – The streets snaking through downtown Miami’s high rises will be buzzing this Saturday as commuters make way for dart-shaped racing cars zooming by at breakneck speeds – and little noise.

The race drivers will be competing in the first Formula E race in the United States since the all-electric series was launched in Beijing in September 2014.

Halfway through its inaugural season, Formula E has offered the same, albeit quieter, thrills as the popular Formula One events, with low-slung, opened-wheeled cars capable of speeds up to 136 miles per hour (220 kilometers per hour)…

Self tying shoes

If there was one disappointment about Nike’s awesome Back to the Future II Air Mag, it’s that the shoes didn’t have Marty’s power laces (and that they only made 1,500 and neither you nor I own a pair). But Nike designer Tinker Hatfield says that’s about to change—power laces are coming in 2015. The future is here! Yes, as Sole Collector tells it, designer Tinker Hatfield showed up at the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab space in New Orleans yesterday. When asked about power laces, his answer was pretty unequivocal: ”Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!”

Sakaya Sato

Jetman over Grand canyon

May 11, 2011 – Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy, also known as “Jetman,” successfully completed a flight above the Grand Canyon on Saturday with his custom-designed jetpack, according to the watchmaker Breitling, which sponsored the event.

Rossy was originally scheduled to take flight on Friday in front of the media and members of the Hualapai, a Native American tribe which manages the area flew over. However, Rossy canceled his originally scheduled flight, citing a lack of training due to a lengthy authorization process from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Since the flight was authorized for both Friday and Saturday, Rossy attempted to complete his flight in front of few observers outside of his support team. Launched from a helicopter 8,000 feet above the Grand Canyon, Rossy soared at speeds reaching up to 190 miles per hour for an eight-minute flight before deploying his parachute for a safe landing.

This was Rossy’s first flight in the United States; however, he has successfully completed a trip in his jetpack across the English Channel as well as several stunts. Not all of his journeys have gone according to plan, however. In 2009, Rossy crashed into the sea off Morocco after trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar.
